RAY CHARLES was born on September 23, 1930 in Albany, Georgia to Aretha and Baily Robinson. Ray began losing his vision at the age of four and by the time he was seven was completely blind. He began playing piano at an early age and by the time he was 20 had his own band and a hit record: I Got A Woman. Ray Charles is considered the pioneer of soul music, a mixture of gospel and blues. Ray earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and 12 Grammys. I think that the best way to describe the relationship between Ray and music is with one of his own quotes: "Music is nothing separate from me. It is me... You'd have to remove the music surgically." Ray passed away from liver disease on June 11, 2004.
